Insurance essentials – 1 October 2026

Issue 2, from 22 September to 1 October 2026: the 2027 health insurance premiums are known. The average increase, what lies behind it, and the deadline for switching insurer.

Published 01.10.2026

Period covered: from 22.09.2026 to 01.10.2026

2027 premiums: up 5.0% on average

Date of the event: 29.09.2026

What changed

On 29 September 2026, the Federal Office of Public Health announced the 2027 premiums for compulsory health insurance. The average monthly premium will reach CHF 412, which is CHF 19.70 (5.0%) more than in 2026. For adults it rises to CHF 487.60 (+CHF 22.80, 4.9%), for young adults to CHF 338.80 (+CHF 15.40, 4.8%) and for children to CHF 128.10 (+CHF 5.70, 4.6%).

What it means in practice

According to the FOPH, the increase follows that of healthcare costs, expected to grow by 4.7% in 2026 and 5.0% in 2027 because of a rising number of treatments, advances in medical technology and an ageing population. These are averages: each person's premium depends on their insurer, where they live, their deductible and their insurance model.

Switching insurer: until the end of November

Date of the event: 29.09.2026

What changed

Health insurers have until the end of October to tell their members the 2027 premiums. After that, anyone can switch basic insurer or change their insurance model until the end of November.

What it means in practice

When a new premium is announced, the law allows you to switch insurer for the end of the month before it takes effect, with one month's notice. For a switch on 1 January 2027, your cancellation must therefore reach the insurer by 30 November at the latest. Basic insurance benefits are the same with every insurer.

Who is concerned
