Issue 3, from 2 to 9 October 2026: the AHV/AVS and IV/AI pensions and the second- and third-pillar amounts for 2027, and the 29 November vote on the VAT rise to fund the 13th AHV pension.

Published 12.10.2026

Period covered: from 02.10.2026 to 12.10.2026

AHV/IV pensions 2027: +CHF 20 on the minimum pension

Date of the event: 02.10.2026

What changed

On 2 October 2026, the Federal Council decided to adjust AHV/IV pensions by 1.59% from 1 January 2027. The minimum pension rises from CHF 1,260 to CHF 1,280 a month and the maximum pension from CHF 2,520 to CHF 2,560. In the second pillar, the entry threshold rises from CHF 22,680 to CHF 23,040 and the coordination deduction from CHF 26,460 to CHF 26,880. The maximum pillar 3a deduction rises from CHF 7,258 to CHF 7,373 with a second pillar, and from CHF 36,288 to CHF 36,864 without one.

What it means in practice

Pensions are adjusted every two years to price and wage trends, using the mixed index, the average of the price index and the wage index. These amounts apply to a full contribution record: with missing years, the pension is a partial one. The minimum contribution for the self-employed and people not in work also rises, from CHF 530 to CHF 541 a year.

Who is concerned

People receiving an AHV or IV pension, employees in a second-pillar pension fund, and anyone paying into a pillar 3a.

13th AHV pension: VAT vote on 29 November

Date of the event: 05.10.2026

What changed

On 5 October 2026, the Federal Council recommended accepting, in the popular vote of 29 November 2026, additional AHV funding through a VAT increase. The standard rate would rise from 8.1% to 8.5% and the special rate for accommodation from 3.8% to 4.0%; the reduced rate, which applies in particular to food and medicines, would stay at 2.6%. The increase could take effect in early 2028 and would bring the AHV about CHF 1.5 billion a year.

What it means in practice

This revenue is meant to fund the 13th AHV pension, paid for the first time in December 2026: up to CHF 2,520 more a year for a single person and up to CHF 3,780 for a couple. According to the Federal Council, AHV spending exceeds its revenue by more than CHF 1 billion in 2026, and without extra revenue the fund would fall below the legal minimum from 2027. A minority in Parliament opposes it, arguing that a higher VAT weakens purchasing power.

Who is concerned

People eligible to vote on 29 November, all consumers, and the roughly 2.6 million recipients of the 13th AHV pension.
